An opening at the centre
We often describe a house through its rooms. A courtyard asks us to look at what happens between them. From the kitchen, a patch of sky becomes a daily weather report. From a corridor, a planted corner makes the walk from one room to another feel like part of the home. The empty space does a surprising amount of work.
Privacy without turning away
A house arranged around a courtyard can open generously inwards. Windows face planting and shared outdoor space, while the outside edges of the building can feel more contained. The pleasure is in the balance: a sense of shelter, with a clear connection to the world beyond the glass. At our imagined Quarry House, that balance shapes the entire plan.
Notice the ordinary moments
When looking at a courtyard home, picture the small routines. Where would you take a cup of tea? Which room catches the first light? Does the route through the house offer a glimpse of the garden? A memorable home is often made from modest moments, repeated every day.
